IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS EPISODE PLEASE DO NOT READ FURTHER

I have been waiting for this show ever since I heard it announcement and dare I say, It stood up to the hype really well.

I have read the Light novel, or rather, the webnovel of this anime for a quite a while now. There is so much that I wish I could see drawn and animated and it sure as hell delivered on it.

In my experiences with Isekai light novels which currently bloats the genre, there a few that stood out to me as refreshing and fun.

Overlord, Tate no yuusha, Kono suba, Kumo desuga, nani ga?, death march and finally, Tensei slime shitara datta ken.

There are of course, many out there that I do not know about and only came to like after it got an anime adaptation, such as isekai maou where the author is competent in creating an interesting world that feel like a fantasy, while knowing that it shouldn't take itself too seriously, despite it being ecchi and what not.

As I am familiar with the source material this time, I can talk a bit more about how much justice the anime did to the light novel.

In short, It really did justice to the source material.

First off, an applaud to studio 8bit with their work on the special effects in this episode.

They really went all out and cut no corners in their attempt to visualize what the "system" is doing when the MC is about to get transferred into another world.

The lazy path here could have easily been a disembodied voice in the sky, but nope, they chose to go with something much more tangible. The bastards have visualized it properly.

I was even more impressed with their attempt at visualizing what it would be like to see from the perspective of the slime.

the 3d rendered effect really made this stood out

Visualization of seeing without eyes as something "fuzzy"

the "monogatari"-ish cut to this, allow us to experience satoru's thought process

And this one takes the cake for me personally

IS THIS A JOJO REF? EVERYTHING IS A JOJO REF

it looks so much like this scene above which is from part 2 of Jojo, space kars scene thing. It gave me a chuckle when I realized this.

The herb eating scene and the rock eating scene was so smooth and fast. It was so goddamn refresing to see things actually animated properly.

I have got to point out how expressive they made the slime model. Seriously, well done.

A lot of care was put into these cuts. These are individual design choices, not budget cutting decisions.

Pure 3D scene to 2D scene that fits with theme of the show and doesn't deduct to the overall watching experience?

Take my praise any day son.

And then we have the cut-in style scenes that works really well in giving a deeper explanation of what was a wall of exposition in the light novel. This is a very important because the world of MMORPGs is complex.

Users, or watchers in this case must know the intricacies of the world they are in, before they are able to be fully immersed in the game world they have gotten themselves into.

What could be considered interesting to a well versed player would be no different to a technobabble to the people who don't know about the basics of the world. The way in which the explanation is executed is then core to watcher retention. Instead of having the system spell it out for the users, the author made it so that our lovely slime here experiments with the environment, never fully wording out the explanations.

The animation made it easy to understand the thought process of the character, leading to a non-intrusive and fast information "digestion"(heh) process.

Seriously, all of this in three scenes and only six to eight spoken sentences that just confirmations of what he have already been shown. well done. This is easy data retention for any level of viewers.

There are so much more of these and you should expect more of it in the future as the story gets more and more complex.

Later into the episode we are met with another character which will serve as the introduction to the power scale for this world.

Being able to hear the exchange between the two characters is truly a gift to the readers as we finally get to see and hear the nature of the character in question.

For some, imagining a tsundere dragon can be a pretty hard feat, the exchange between the two characters will definitely be an experience for many.

There are also many spetacular effects in this part of the episode like our slime being able to see with color for the first time. I'm trying my best to spoil as little as possible, well, if you haven't watched the episode, you really should.

Overall, this was a very solid first episode, i am impressed by the level of detail and animation that studio 8bit has put in. They have done many anime with 2D and 3D combined in it They have shown us their mastery of the art and had made me believe that this anime is in good hands for the episodes to come.

The also had an anime only segment at the very end of the episode, Very nice touch there. Good job.
